The Casual Academy provides 18-25 year olds from diverse, often disadvantaged backgrounds with hands-on filmmaking experience at a working production company.
The Academy was formed in 2012 and exists to broaden access to the media industry.
Sadly, internships are all too frequently unpaid in this industry with the result that they have largely become the preserve of the significantly privileged, particularly in London.
Training at the Casual Academy is provided by our professional filmmakers who mentor the young people as they learn and experience the four key stages in the production of a film: creative, production, direction, post-production.
They work as a team making a film for a small local charity. This means that they produce a film to a real brief from a real client. At the end of the process, the charity is provided with a film for their own use, free of charge.
