His topic at the conference will be “Oh No! Not Another Performance Management Presentation!”

What will you be speaking about at Disrupt HR and why did you choose this topic over any other?

I’m going to be speaking about something everybody knows–that every company’s performance management system sucks. I feel like I have a point of view on it that doesn’t get discussed much. It’s because we’re all do something that is so intuitive–assessing people based on results. Instead, we should move from performance management to behavior management by looking only at input, not output. It sounds crazy, I know, but I’ll explain why it’s crazier to continue doing things as we have been.

 

Do you believe the HR profession is being or will be truly disrupted, and if so, what’s driving this change?

Hm, here’s my take on that. It will be disrupted insofar as any HR professional allows or wants it to be. I think it is possible to continue working with status quo concepts, and I think companies will do just fine. But who wants to do “just fine”? It’s up to every HR professional to shake things up and inspire people to think differently to improve our workplaces.

 

In your opinion, where does the shift in HR need to occur?

With me, of course! But also with you. And with every single HR employee. I don’t believe in top-down or bottom-up approaches. You hear things like “leaders own the culture,” but each employee owns the culture. You are the culture. That’s where it needs to come from. If you don’t like something, try to change it.

 

If you could recommend a book for everyone in attendance to read before attending, what would it be?

Peter Singer’s Practical Ethics. It has nothing to with business, but it has everything to do with business. It’s about the way we live, a guide to opening up your mind, looking at things from different angles, and questioning everything, which is the whole point of the Disrupt conference, right?
